- Improving Memory Quiz - Thurs. OCT 1st
- Two Levels of Memory
- Short-Term memory: what you keep in your mind for the moment
- Long-term memory: what you know & can bring to mind whenever you want
- The best way to move information from your short-term memory to your long-term memory is to repeat it (use/apply it again & again)
- Two ways to Improve Memory
- Grouping - it is often easier to remember separate items of information when they are organized into groups or categories.
- Visualizing- mental images can help you remember data. This means that you translate words & ideas into pictures in your mind.
- Mnemonics - memory aids
- Linking - creating links between words by using one word to to bring to mind the next.
- For example, if you need to remember the words turkey, glove, & sailboat... you might write, The turkey's glove fell off the sailboat.
- Number-Shape System- can help you remember phone numbers, dates & other important numbers. Each image should have the same shape as the number it represents.
- For example, the image for the number 8 might be a snowman.
- Create catchy sentence, phrase, or rhyme to help you remember important information.
- For example, I before e except after c, except for words sounding like neighbor or weigh.
- Acrostic- can help you remember lists. To create an acrostic, take the first letter from each word that you want to remember and create a sentence or phrase.
- For example, if you needed to remember the Presidents: Carter, Reagan, Bush, Clinton, Bush you might write the sentence... Cars rarely beat city buses.
